Katsina gov’t received 20 kidnapped victims rescued after 5 months in bandits’ camp

Katsina State Government has received 20 kidnapped victims including a 5 day old baby girl who escaped after its mother and the 18 others have spent about 5 months in the hands of Kidnappers.

The victims comprised of 5 nursing mothers and their infants, 1 young man and 9 children ranging from 4 to 10 years escaped following an airstrike on their abductors’ den in Zamfara forest.

Receiving them on behalf of the Governor at the State Pilgrims Camp, the Secretary to the Government of the State, Mustapha Muhammad Inuwa expressed delight over their rescue.

He instantly directed the Medical Team from the State Primary Healthcare Service to re-examine their condition and ensure their safe return to their families at Katoge Community, Batsari town after the medical checks.

The SGS also directed the Permanent Secretary Cabinet and Security to provide financial support while SEMA to give them some food items to cushion their hardships.

Fielding questions from Journalists, Mustapha Inuwa attributed the rescue of the victims to the current military occupation and the stringent containment measures adopted by the affected States in the North West.

He however urged the Federal Government to order for similar operations taking place in Zamfara forest to be carried out simultaneously in all the affected States.

The SGS also called on the people to be patient with the measures adopted by the authorities and always provide the Security Agencies with useful information to end the menace.

A statement issued by the Director Press to the Secretary to the Government of the State, Abdullahi Aliyu Yar’adua said all the victims have since been reunited with their families.

Narrating her ordeal, Sahura Haruna who delivered a baby 5 days ago, said that they were 28 kidnapped by the bandits from their houses at Katoge in Batsari town, some times in April this year.

She explained that as at that time she was about 5 months pregnant.

While in captivity she said about 6 out of them were released on payment of ransom by their relatives and 2 kids died of hunger and other untold hardships.

Sahura further revealed that they were subjected to merciless beatings and starving in the hands of the bandits because, according to them “our relatives have failed to pay the ransom as demanded”.

She disclosed that last Thursday morning, an aircraft struck which dispersed the bandits and that paved the way for them to escape.

According to her, they ran until they arrived at a village in Birnin Magaji Local Government Area of Zamfara State from where they were handed over to the Security Agents who took them to the authorities in Gusau.

While in Gusau she said they were informed that Katsina State Government had sent vehicles to transport them back home.
