Senator Babba Kaita sponsors bill to amend Federal Colleges of Education Act

Distinguished Senator Ahmad Babba Kaita representing Katsina North has described the ACT which set up the Colleges of Education in Nigeria as being archaic, which according to him contained some items that are not in tandem with the current realities as reflected in the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

In a lead debate, Senator Kaita wh recalled that the Bill was read for the first time on the 15th of October, 2020, said the proposed Bill seeks to establish the Federal Colleges of Education, listed in Schedule 1 to the Act.

He said the new ACT was among others, meant to provide full-time courses of teaching, instruction and training in Technology, Applied Sciences, Commerce, Arts, Social Sciences, Humanities, Law and Management as well as carry out research in the development and adaptation of technologies.

Senator Babba Kaita explained that in a 2018 study on Restructuring Nigerian Higher Education (College of Education) for Sustainable Development, Olusegun, Adewole and Adigun (2018), while assessing the goals of Colleges of Education in Nigeria, found that Colleges of Education have not been able to achieve close to average.

The Borderless Senator listed some challenges bedevilling the Colleges of Education to include political, financial as well as personnel issues, which has resulted in low-quality outputs, the poor state of infrastructure, poor international competitiveness amongst others, noting that the Bill was aimed at achieving the 3Rs; Reconstruct, Restructure and Rebuild the nation’s Federal Colleges of Education.

Kaita concluded his presentation with an appeal to his colleagues to support this Bill to scale up the activities of Colleges of Education across the country for the overall development of the sector.
