Why We Should Thank FG And Katsina Gov’t For Road And Railway Line Linking Nigeria And Niger Republic — Maiwada Dammallam

Niger is a landlocked country. Its gateway to the outside world is Libya in the northeast, Chad to the east, Nigeria to the south, Benin and Burkina Faso to the southwest, Mali to the west, and Algeria to the northwest.

The cumbersomeness of Niger Republic relying on Libya and Algeria as an economic gateway should be very clear. Hostile terrains and decades of sustained insecurity in the region are a discouragement Niger Republic will certainly look at before risking selecting any of the two as an economic gateway option.

Mali to the west and Chad to the east are also landlocked and for long very unstable. Burkina Faso to the southwest is also landlocked and battling similar demons as Niger Republic to so reliable an economic gateway for Niger Republic.

Nigeria to the South has all the advantages of being Niger Republic’s economic gateway. Similar terrain and a very large population with almost identical cultural and religious background enough to overshadow other problem issues like Nigeria’s insecurity which, by the way, is now a subcontinental problem.

With a huge deposit of uranium (fuel for nuclear power plants which is sought after by countries who possess them) and newly discovered oil reserves it shouldn’t require a scientist’s brain to calculate the economic benefit of Nigeria opening the Niger Republic economic gateway to benefit from its promising market.

Building a railway line linking Nigeria and Niger Republic is more economically beneficial than the route you are accusing Buhari of not providing which, by the way, is already in the pipeline. Just as much, building a road linking Katsina and Maradi by Katsina State is an excellent futuristic plan by the state to invest in Niger Republic’s. Forget the uninformed political noises about the cost of the Jibia/Maradi road being built by Katsina State of being inflated. The truth is, the road is a federal road being built for Nigeria by Katsina State Government and the cost will be defrayed by the FG.

Is it logical for Katsina State Government to be dumb as to inflate a 3-kilometer road contract which bills will be subjected to FG’s review for the purpose of refund? And I wonder where the idea of a flat road construction cost is coming from? Each road is uniquely designed to accommodate identified and foreseeable obstacles. It’s therefore impracticable to attach a flat price for road construction. That we are so inclined to politicize and rubbish every issue is another problem we have to learn how to live with.

By the way, it’s not only the railway line linking Nigeria and Niger Republic President Buhari is building. He’s networking the whole country.
