UBEC inaugurate Girl-Child centre in Katsina

The Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), has inaugurated two classroom blocks in Gafia Village of Kaita Local Government Area of Katsina State, to serve as a girl child education centre, The Nation reports.

Executive Secretary of the commission, Dr Hamid Bobboyi, said besides the inauguration of the two blocks of classrooms, the centre also has a computer centre, coordinator’s office, and room for members of staff as well as solar-powered system.

He further revealed that the construction of the centre was aimed at correcting the neglect of girl child education in the Northern part of Nigeria which has the highest global records of out-of-school children.

He said: ”The setting up of the centre was to encourage parents and the girl child to embrace education in the 21st Century.

“The world is changing. In the long past, mothers could not equip the girl child to survive in the 21st Century. The children they brought up could not be properly oriented to play important roles in the present dispensation.

“Without girl child education, we can’t change society. We have been discouraging the girl child from accessing education. We are glad because we are beginning to link up with state government on how to plan and move forward.

“We can solve an aspect of the problem because of the social issues. That is why I’m happy with what is going on in Katsina State. At least, there is an effort towards looking at this issue in a holistic manner.”

The Deputy Governor of Katsina State, QS Manir Yakubu, thanked UBEC for the initiative, saying that Katsina is privileged to have three of such projects sited in the state and would do all within its powers to support the project.
