Fed gov’t promised to commissioned Lambar Rimi 10MW project 7-times and all failed
The Federal Government awarded the project to a French firm, Messrs Vergnet SA in 2010 at the cost of 18,500,000pounds, plus N494million with a completion period of 24 months, that was by 2012.
In May 2016, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Power, Amb. Godknows Igali, has said the 10 megawatts (MW) Katsina State wind-powered plant was at 98 percent completion level and it will be ready for commissioning in June 2016.
On the February 24th, 2017, the Power Committee of the Nigerian national assembly visited the VERGNET wind power plant and Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola who is the Federal Minister of Power, Works and Housing required Vergnet to organize the visit of the committee as they were preparing the 2017 budget and the Katsina wind farm project was part of it.
In February 2018, officials of the ministry inspected the plant to see some of the fabricated and erected turbines that were operational. The consultant and assistant project manager for O.T. Otis Engineering, Pius Onyenagubo, said the operational part would be commissioned in March 2018.
This latest timeline was set in March 2019, when officials of the ministry and those from the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGOF) visited the plant.
The Minister of Power, Engr. Sale Mamman, who inspected the plant last weekend at Lambar Rimi community, also commissioned the transmission lines that will evacuate the generated power.
Similarly, in early March 2020, the contractor executing the project and Managing Director of Crown Resources Development Company Limited (CREDCO), Barny Adeku Ojiah, told the Minister of Power, Engr. Sale Mamman, who inspected the plant that 31 turbines had been installed and that they could generate 5.5MW at a 65 per cent wind speed efficiency.
Ojiah said plans were ongoing to install the remaining six turbines, and that with strong wind speed, the plant could generate over 10MW.
In plain terms, Mr Ojiah said the project could be completed and ready for commissioning in the next eight weeks (that is in May, 2020).
