Katsina Lawmaker asks FG to establish ultra-modern irrigation canals at Zobe dam
The Honorable member representing Dutsin-ma/Kurfi Federal constituency at the national assembly, Hon Armaya’u Abdulkadir has presented a motion at the floor of the green chamber calling on Federal Government to utilize Zobe Dam in Dutsin-ma Local Government Area of Katsina State.
While presenting the motion on the floor of the House of Representatives, Hon. Armaya’u informed the House that the Zobe Dam was constructed in 1972 under the Sokoto Rima River Basin Development Authority with the purpose of achieving comprehensive and integrated rural development such as the provision of irrigation facilities, flood control, domestic/industrial water supply, and hydroelectricity.
He, however, regrettably informed the house that since the commissioning of the project in 1983, it has not been put to use for its major purposes even though it has the capacity of irrigating over 20,000 hectares of land, supply 80 million liters of water daily and generating hydro-power that can supply the whole of Katsina State.
He, therefore, asked the House to resolve to urge the Federal Ministry of Water Resources to award the contract for establishment of ultra-modern irrigation canals of the dam and ensure full functionality and utilization of the zobe dam as well as mandate the House committee on water resources to ensure implementation.
