Amnesty: Katsina State gov’t swap 6 bandits with 20 kidnapped persons

Six suspected bandits kept in detention by some security agencies were this Tuesday handed over to leaders of the forest as part of the fulfillment of the pledge made during ongoing dialogue being carried out in the eight Frontline local governments in Katsina State.

Speaking shortly before the handover, Governor Aminu Bello Masari recalled that for the last one week, he and security chiefs have been visiting the local governments that border the Rugu Forests.

Alhaji Aminu Masari explained that part of the agreement with suspected cattle rustlers and bandits is that government would handover their members in detention that have not been prosecuted and they would in return handover to government people that have been kidnapped.

He said that the process had started yesterday where the suspected bandits surrendered five kidnapped people, two females and three males, adding that before closing time today, they are going to return many people kidnapped and are in their custody.

Governor Aminu Masari announced that six suspected bandits and cattle rustlers are now being released to their two leaders, stressing upon return with those released to them, they would in turn release 20 kidnapped people by the end of this tuesday.

He expressed the hope that the process would be completed within the next one or two days so that government would start the second phase of the peace initiatives that have been started with the visit to the localities by the state government in particular and the north Western States in general.
