Twenty years ago, the music industry lost a gem- Mamman Shata. Shata was a well-known musician among the Hausa people of West Africa and even non-Hausa speakers.

Alhaji Shata suffered a debilitating illness that made him be hospitalized in Kano and Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

After some relief following an operation on his urethra in Jeddah, he was hospitalized in the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, Kano, where he died on Friday, 18th June 1999.

He was survived by three wives (Furera, Hadiza, and Binta), 19 children, and 28 grandchildren. He was buried that day in Daura, the city of his benefactor, Emir Muhammadu Bashar, who attended the funeral. Here are some facts you probably didn’t know about Mamman Shata:

1- Mamman Shata died at the age of 76 years old.

2- Shata was buried in Daura by the then Emir of Daura, Muhammadu Bashar because of their closeness.

3- He once contested for the position of Councilorship in Kankia Local Government Area (then comprising of Musawa)

4- Shata was one-time Social Democratic Party Chairman, Funtua LGA.

5- Shata was conferred with Honorary Doctorate Degree by Ahmadu Bello University in 1988.
