The 2018 Katsina international polo tournament that galloped off yesterday with three championship games, is not just one of the most important tournaments in Nigeria, it is one of the oldest and the most attended event that annually blast off the polo season.
Daily trust reports that since the inauguration of Polo in the early 1920s, the tournament has gained in popularity and every year it sees patrons and professional players from all over the world gather in the ancient kingdom to compete for one of Africa’s most coveted polo prizes, the Nigerian Cup.
The tournament is played annually over nine days of top class polo in July at the legendary Sir Usman Nagogo Polo Ground which is set a few hundred meters from the Palace of Emir of Katsina, is seen as the home of Nigerian polo, as the sport has been played there since 1920.
In the opening game of the tournament, two local rivals, Katsina Masanawa clashed with Katsina Danmarna in the Coomassie Cup contest, while the second game of the day pitched Bauchi Babban Gwan against Zxaria Weststream Ponies in the race for the Talba Cup.
The last game of the opening day was another local derby, as Katsina North Bury tackled Katsina Shahida in the second game of the Talba Cup series.
The tournament is considered to be the most prestigious polo tournament alongside Kaduna, Kano and Lagos, is expected to pick up speed with two Coomassie Cup matches, while match of the day is undoubtedly, the opening match of the General Hassan Katsina Cup pitching visiting Yola BSC team against former champions, Katsina kangiwa.
The prestigious tournament is sponsored majorly by the katsina State government, Katsina Emirate Council, Lamido Adamawa and a handful of other corporate and individual partners.
