No fewer than seven people have lost their lives in a ghastly lone accident involving a Volkswagen Golf car along the Batsari/Katsina Road in Katsina State, Punch reports.
The Katsina Command, Federal Road Safety Corps’ spokesman, Abdullahi Ibrahim, who confirmed the development on Tuesday, said the crash occurred about 8 am on Friday, adding that the corps’ attention was drawn to it by a sympathizer who was at the scene.
According to Ibrahim, the car was conveying 12 passengers when the accident occurred.
It was learned that the vehicle ran into a pool of water on the road when a passenger beside the driver suddenly grabbed the steering wheel in fear as the driver struggled to control the vehicle.
The car reportedly veered off the road and crashed into a tree, leading to the death of the victims.
Ibrahim explained that the FRSC and the state police command might resume regular patrol of major roads in the state in order to curtail speeding and overloading by commercial vehicles.
He added that the FRSC officials had now begun what he called “morning cry,” where the officials give at least 10 minutes talk to commercial drivers at major motor parks and garages in the state on the need to avoid speeding, overloading, and other traffic offenses.
He said, “Our morning cry will be on a regular basis and not a one-off thing. Our officials will, every morning, go to major motor parks and garages and have 10 minutes talk with commercial drivers on the need to avoid speeding and overloading and other traffic offenses that can cause accidents on the roads. This is in addition to our other enlightenment programmes.”
It was further learned that a meeting of all stakeholders, involving representatives of the state chapter of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, and their counterparts from the National Association of Road Transport Organisation, FRSC officials and the police was held at the state police command headquarters in Katsina on Monday.
The meeting was reportedly chaired by the state Police Commissioner, Muhammadu Wakili.
