The former Governor of Katsina State, Ibrahim Shehu Shema has urged both the State and Federal governments to step up the funding of educational sector in the country as a key to human resources development and avenue to tackle rising poverty in the society.

Ibrahim Shehu Shema who on Saturday June 30th served as distinguished guest at Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University,  Lapai, Niger State on the special invitation of former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar during the University second Convocation ceremony, said he was impressed with what he saw at the University and further admonished the  State government not to relent  in its effort of funding the educational sector.

Shema during his eight years tenure as Governor sponsored over 800 Katsina State indigenes for foreign studies in critical field  such as Medicine, Pharmacy, Nursing, Radiology, Dentistry, Physiotherapy,  Computer Engineering, Marine Engineering e.t.c, also ensured payment of WAEC and NECO and other examination fees by his administration for all students including non indigenes going to public schools.

This is in addition to his administration reviewed of tertiary institutions teachers salary and payment of bonus to them, and increased Scholarship allowances of Katsina State students in tertiary institutions.

General Abdulsalami Abubakar is the Chairman of the IBB  University Endowment Board of Trustees. Also present at the occasion was Governor of Niger State, Abubakar Sani Bello,  Group Managing Director of NNPC,  Dr. Maikanti Baru who was conferred with Honorary Foundation Fellow of the University and Sheikh Ahmed Lemu who was conferred with Doctor of Letters Honoris Causa.
