Cholera claim lives of over 60 people in Katsina

Cholera outbreak currently ravaging some communities in Katsina State has claimed lives of no fewer than 60 people across the state.

This was stated by the Executive Governor of Katsina State, Rt Hon Aminu Bello Masari while delivering his speech at the 2021 Annual General Meeting, AGM, of the Nigeria Medical Association, NMA at the Katsina State Secretariat complex on Saturday.

The Governor, represented by the Commissioner of Health, Engr Nuhu Yakubu Danja also said over 1,400 people have also been so far affected by the outbreak.

Governor Masari further stated that the State government is making efforts towards control of the outbreak.

According to him, “Free drugs for the treatment of this outbreak are being purchased for distribution to hospital for treatment of cases, health education on prevention and management of the disease is ongoing, active case search and surveillance are also on going across the State.

“Let me seize this opportunity to draw the attention of the general public to the fact that.

“Diarrhea and Vomiting is a preventable disease. Adhering to basic protocols on personal hygiene and use of clean water is the surest preventive measure.

“There is the need to ensure proper environmental sanitation, frequent hand washing, proper food hygiene, washing of all fruits and vegetables before eating, proper cooking of all our food items, food vendors in the markets, road side must ensure that they cover their food items with clean cloth to avoid contact with flies; we must all avoid open defecation and ingestion of contaminated water.”
