Fire destroy 200 shops, Billions of Naira Goods at Katsina Central Market

Katsina hit by worst market fire incident ever 

As traders in the Katsina State popular central market continue to count their losses, the State Government, has promised succour to the affected persons, AIT reports.

Governor Aminu Masari said this shortly, after visiting the market for an on the spot assessment.

He said that , plans are underway to compensate the victims of the inferno, find out the root causes and put modalities in place, to avert future occurrences.

The traders had described the inferno as the worst since the creation of the state, more than 30 years ago.

Lamentations filled the air as thick smoke emanated from several burnt shops inside the central market, with goods in billions of Naira worth of investment razed in the inferno.

An eye witness, Yusuf Saeed, said that the fire had started from a bank located in the center of the market at about 7:30 am, before spreading to other market stalls.

He also attributed the devastating effect and the rapid spread of the inferno to the presence and sale of gas cylinders, as loud explosions were heard from afar.

One of the victims 22-year old Aliyu Usman, who deals in foodstuff electrical appliances, cooking utensils as well as books, said he only retrieved a copy of the Qur’an from his burnt shop.

He therefore appealed to the state government to immediately come to their aid, by assisting them to rebuild their shops and replace their goods.

President Buhari Reacts

Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed sadness over the fire in Katsina Central Market this morning which destroyed hundreds of shops and billions of Naira worth of wares.

Reacting to the incident, President Buhari described the destruction visited by the fire as “extremely horrific. I’m extremely sad to hear the tragic news about fire in Katsina market this morning.

“My thoughts are with those who lost their their valued wares, and in some of the cases, entire savings. I have instructed concerned authorities to provide all possible assistance on urgent basis.”

Governor Masari Weeps At Scene

Governor Bello Masari on Monday weeped when he visited the scene of the fire at Katsina Central Market.

Katsina Post had reported how good worth millions of naira were destroyed in the inferno.

The Governor, who struggled to hold back his tears, did not address the media before leaving the scene.

Later on, the Governor addressed the press at his office where he described the incident as the most devastating inferno that ever occurred in the state.

He therefore consoled the traders whose goods and commodities were destroyed by the fire and prayed for Almighty to replace what they lost with greater bounties.

The Governor also promised his administration’s commitment to cushion the effect of the incident on the affected traders.
