KATSINA YOUTH FREEDOM MOVEMENT UNDER THE LEADERSHIP OF COMRADE MUHAMMED SANI ISAH CALLS FOR THE ESTABLISMENT OF NATIONAL OPEN UNIVERSITY STUDY CENTRE IN FUNTUA TOWN

Funtua is a town that hosts the Funtua local government under the Katsina state government, northwest Nigeria. It was created in 1976 along side with many local governments in Nigeria.

According to the present description of Funtua, Funtua town has the largest local council in the entire senatorial zone from which local government councils namely; Faskari, Sabuwa, Dandume, Danja, Bakori, etc. are formed. Having mentioned that, Funtua town is a central location that serves as a bypass to other geo political zones. It is an interlinking joint to a number of destinations across Nigeria.

Funtua has also been known as the commercial home for agricultural engagements and productivity, whereas, Funtua town is conducive and accommodative to other kinds of tribes in Nigeria for peaceful living without any compromise of harmony.

A commercial town like Funtua town is supposed to be embraced with good infrastructural developments for the coming generations to witness and live on.

As it is conventionally stated, “Education is the best legacy.” It is only education that can shed light to the differences between the privileged and the less privileged, when it comes to the retainment and absorption of knowledge.

Section 18 of the 1999 constitution of Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended says “Education in Nigeria is a right and a must obligation, not to be treated as a privilege exercise.”

Therefore, as it has been recently passed to bill to embark on the establishment of Federal University of Agriculture and Technology, Funtua, after its public hearing processes in both chambers of the National Assembly of Nigeria, we hereby beseech the government to as well make inclusive in the 2021 budget, the establishment of National Open University of Nigeria study centre in Funtua.

JUSTIFICATIONS FOR THE URGENT CALL FOR THE ESTABLISMENT OF NATIONAL OPEN UNIVERSITY OF NIGERIA STUDY CENTRE IN FUNTUA TOWN

According to a reliable survey by a graduate of professional diploma in Abdullah Aminchi College of advance studies in 2019, more than 72 percent of youth in Funtua between the average age of 19 years and 27 years wish to further their education after being done with secondary school certification.

From 2018 to 2019, the same survey says only 35 percent enrolls for university and polytechnic diploma at the various catchment colleges in the town, while 27 percent chooses to go for same diploma outside the town, so sad that only 10 percent made it to the university level directly.

Many individuals wish to further their prospective education in Funtua town but there had been no availability of sound tertiary institution close by in Funtua to accomplish that.

From this analysis, one can presume that the best alternative to jeopardize this disgusting trend from not getting access to education above diploma certification is the establishment of one or more open universities in Funtua town.

Recently, the vice chancellor of the national Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), Prof. Abdulla Uba has made it clear that the members of the public should demand for their rights by calling for the establishment of more National Open Universities study centre in their community.

He said Kano state has the largest study centre in Nigeria as a result of the unflinching functions of their lawmakers that cultivate the act of using the establishment as a constituency project across Kano state senatorial districts and federal constituencies.
