Governor Aminu Bello Masari says the present APC administration had expended 6 billion Naira in addressing environmental challenges across the State.

Alhaji Aminu Bello Masari was speaking during the flagging off payment of compensations to the project affected persons by the phase one intervention through urban network for Jibiya town flood control at emergency site projects under the Katsina State Nigeria Erosion and watershed Management Project -NEWMAP.

The Governor explained that Katsina state in the last five years received over 3000 requests from communities for the control of flood, erosion and related issues.

To date he said government had provided 120 flood and erosion control projects thereby benefiting sites in over 150 communities across the nook and crannies of the state.

Under the NEWMAP, Governor Aminu Masari explained that the state government had paid 500 million Naira cash in to government counterpart fund account and also contributed over one billion Naira in kind.

These, he said were contributions towards the provision of office accommodation, furniture, Equipment and some bankable designs, some of which the implementation had begun.

He said that the event at Jibiya was meant to commence the fulfilment of the state government’s responsibilities in the resettlement action plans for four project sites, which he noted was the payment of the compensation to all the project affected persons.

The Governor therefore informed the stakeholders that the state government had willingly provided over 340 million Naira compensation for payment to the 1386 identified affected persons in the four project locations.

This he said will be discharged through the state project management unit to allow for the smooth implementation of the project.

He expressed gratitude to the world bank team , the federal project management unit under the federal ministry of environment and the federal ministry of finance for facilitating the realisation of the projects.

In an address, the state commissioner of environment, Alhaji Hamza sule Faskari revealed that in the last five years, the ministry of environment had executed flood and erosion control structures in urban and rural areas of the state.

These projects, he said include overcoming of threat to a school in Ketare of Kankara local government, Kagana in Faskari, Charanchi Pilot primary school, flood control at inwala, Yan alewa and farin masallaci in Kofar Kaura.

Other projects executed by the ministry, according to the commissioner are kayauki perennial floods control projects in Batagarawa local government, Mahuta flood control drainage in Dandume local government and the diversional channel constructed at Malumfashi to influence quality and increased effluent discharge of water into Turo dam in Malumfashi.

He said that the ministry of environment had constructed latrines in public places to improve access to sanitation facilities, improve hygiene and reduction in the number of people practicing open defecation.

The representative of the National coordinator of NEWMAP and the social and livelihood specialist of the project, Mrs Ruth Mshelia commended Governor Aminu Masari for the settlement of counterpart funding to the project.

She said that the payment made it possible for the resettlement action plans to Kickstart in the state.

Mrs Ruth Mshelia requested Jibiya community to assist in making the project to become a reality.

Earlier in a welcome address, the project coordinator Engineer Ashiru Mohammed explained that NEWMAP is a world bank intervention project for the execution of storm water drainage management, flood control and land degradation.
Engineer Ashiru Mohammed congratulated people of Jibiya town for the commencement of the project.

He called on them to cooperate with NEWMAP team of experts, contractors and staff during the period of execution of the project.

In a vote of thanks, the Sarkin Arewan Katsina and District head of Jibiya, Alhaji Rabe Jibiya showered encomiums on the governor for fulfilling the pledge made to people affected by floods last year in Jibiya.

Highlight of the ceremony was the presentation of cheques to some of the people affected by the project in Jibiya by Governor Aminu Bello Masari.
