Courts in Katsina commence online sittings, proceedings

The Katsina State Chief Judge, Justice Musa Danladi Abubakar had on Monday launched the commencement of virtual court proceedings in the state’s courts.

According to the Chief Judge, the new procedure introduced would go a long way in quickening and easing the administration and dispensation of justice in the state.

Justice Danladi Abubakar said the state judiciary had put in place the platforms required to ensure hitch-free virtual court proceedings.

He said necessary security and other measures to curb hacking of the system or forgery of documents and data in the new court procedure had been put in place.

The Chief Judge said the virtual court proceedings were starting with the high courts and would later be adopted by magistrates and other lower courts in the state.

He said the virtual court proceedings were being done in phases because of financial implications.

The Chief Judge said all the state nine high courts and twenty-five magistrates’ courts would soon adopt the virtual court proceedings.

He said, “We are commencing the virtual court proceedings today (Monday) and we hope all stakeholders would support the project. We have demonstrated the system once, twice, thrice and the system is working.

“We have adopted some platforms that allow lawyers to sit in the comfort of their chambers and take part in the court proceedings while the judge sits in his court and directs proceedings. Although there are some challenges including the constitutional provision for handling criminal cases, etc, but I know we shall get over all these.

“Virtual court proceedings is a reality we cannot run away from. The process of technology in court proceedings could be difficult but we shall overcome it.

“The world is now a global village. We are already used to online banking; digital newspapers, etc. So, we shall soon be used to virtual court proceedings.

The Chief Judge lauded Governor Aminu Masari for his support for the state judiciary. The virtual court proceedings were being done with his (Governor Masari) full support.
