Eleven local hunters from four villages of Kaurawa, Gidan Goge, Tashar Tsamiya and Zan Bago in Pauwa ward of Kanakara Local Government Area of Katsina State have been killed by suspected armed bandits while hunting around Dajin Giwa forest.

Local witnesses said the hunters were killed Sunday night when they were attacked around Dajin Giwa in Pauwa village where they went for a hunting expedition.

Ten hunters were said to have lost their lives on the spot while the eleventh victim died yesterday morning at the Kankara General Hospital where both the injured and corpses of the deceased were taken, the source added.

When contacted, Spokesman for the State Police Command, SP Gambo Isa said only eight of the local hunters were killed during the encounter.

He said the hunters and some local Yansakai (volunteers) believed to be armed with charms and other local instruments went into the forest to fight the bandits, resulting in a bloody encounter with the bandits who were armed with AK 47.

“Consequently, eight of the ‘Yan Sakai were killed, many sustained injuries; among those killed were Abdulaziz Bawa, Muntari Kaura, Nura and Yahaya both of Tashar Tsamiya, and Umar Bawa amongst others.” The source said.

He said, already the state Commissioner of Police, Sanusi Buba has dispatched a combined team of security personnel under DCP Suleiman Ketere to comb the area and apprehend the perpetrators.
