Coronavirus: Katsina gov’t mulls banning of congregational prayers, gatherings

Katsina State Government is contemplating suspending religious gatherings such as Friday Juma’at prayers, daily congregational prayers in the coming days as part of efforts to reduce the chances of spreading COVID-19, Katsina Post learned.

A top government official in the state who is in the know how of the situation and pleaded for anonymity told Katsina Post that the state government will likely imitate the decision of the government of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the cradle of Islam, whom banned Juma’at prayers in the two Holy Mosques in Makkah and Madina.

According to him, Kaduna State, which shares border with Katsina State had earlier took the decision to ban all religious gatherings such as Friday Juma’at prayers, daily congregational prayers and Sunday services so it is only logical for the Katsina State to take same decision.

Recall also that the state government had earlier directed the closure of all schools across the state from Monday, 23rd March, 2020.

It is also worthy to note that in many Muslim-majority countries like Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates, members of the public are encouraged to pray at home, and not congregate as is the practice in normal times.
