Katsina Gov’t Pays N500m To World Bank’s NEWMAP Counter Funding Pledge

Katsina State Government has paid its counterpart funding of N500million to World Bank under NEWMAP.

The State Deputy Governor, Mannir Yakubu revealed this while inspecting the plantation of tree seedlings at NEWMAP degraded land reclamation sites at Maiadua and Zango Local Government Areas.

Yakubu explained that the prompt payment of the counterpart funding is to assist the state to benefit from NEWMAP projects.

The Deputy Governor expressed satisfaction with work at the two sites, saying it will assist to address the problem of desertification and erosion.

Yakubu said the state government will establish similar plantations of seedlings at the two sites in each of the 34 Local Government Areas of the state.

He called on the people of Maiadua and Zango to protect and ensure the sustenance of the planted tree seedlings.

Earlier, State Project Coordinator of NEWMAP, Engr. Ashiru Muhammad said about 64,000 tree seedlings are planted at the two sites.

Muhammad said some of the tree seedlings planted will produce different varieties of fruits such as Mango, Guava, Orange, Cashew and Neem.

He said four boreholes were constructed at each site to provide water for the sustenance of the seedlings.

The Coordinator commended Katsina state government and the World Bank for ensuring the successful implementation of NEWMAP programmes in the state.
