Katsina Central Rep member proposes additional French Language village in Katsina, others

The member representing Katsina constituency in the House of Representative, Honourable Salisu Iro Isansi has presented a motion calling for the Federal Government to establish additional centres of the Inter-University French Language Village, Badagry Lagos in other states that border French-speaking countries to reduce the pressure on the Badagry campus.

Hon. Isansi moved the motion on Thursday during the House plenary presided over by the Deputy Speaker of the House, Hon. Ahmed Idris and seconded by Rep. Idris Kabiru from Kano State.

In the motion, Hon. Isansi also urged the House to mandate the Committee on Tertiary Education and Services to ensure compliance.

While speaking on the need for the motion, Hon Isansi that Nigeria is an Anglo-Phone country which is sandwiched between French-speaking countries in West Africa and its geographical location makes it imperative for Nigerians to learn the French language.

According to him, because there are over one hundred Universities and Colleges of Education in Nigeria where the French language is taught and part of the requirements for the award of either a degree or a National Certificate of Education (NCE) in the French language is that students concerned must attend the French Language Village, Badagry, Lagos State for their acculturation and immersion programmes; there is a huge number of students attending the French Language Village, Badagry results in the Institution being overcrowded, hence they encounter a series of hardships and inconveniences.

Hon Isansi also said that decentralizing the Inter-University French Language Village, Badagry will ameliorate the hardships being caused by the concentration of many students in one Centre.

After a debate on the motion, it was voted on, adopted and referred to the relevant committees of the House for further legislative inputs and processes.

Important of the bill can not be quantified according to Katsina Post checks.

Katsina being it close to the border with the Niger Republic have many trans-border business people and they will benefit immensely with the establishment of the French village if sited in Katsina.

There will also be spawning of economic activities around the village beside the numerous job opportunities that will be created to the teaming population in the state in general.
