Police in Katsina arrest, arraign 30-year-old man for kidnapping, banditry

One Isiyaku Abubakar also known as Tumba, of Bagoma village in the Kankara Local Government Area of Katsina State, has been arrested by the police operatives in Katsina and subsequently charged him before the state magistrate court with criminal conspiracy, armed robbery, culpable homicide and kidnapping.

The police said

According to the police, the suspect who is believed to be 30-year-old was arrested base on a tip off by some good Samaritans.

He was believed to belonged to a 50-member gang of bandits who recently attacked Dan Hayi village in the same local government area.

He was arrested in the course of police investigation shortly after the incident.

Villagers, who were victims of the onslaught, identified Abubakar as one of those involved in the raid.

According to the police, Abubakar is to face trial for contravening provisions of sections 97 1(2)(a), 221, 337 and 274 of the Penal Code Law.

He was arraigned before a Katsina Senior Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.

The charges read in part, “On June 24, 2019, around 9.40pm, a distress call was received that Dan Hayi village via the Kankara Local Government Area was under attack by bandits numbering about 50, who were armed with AK-47 rifles and other dangerous weapons, and stormed the village on the motorcycles and shooting indiscriminately.

“On receiving the information, a joint patrol team of the Operation Puff Adder and Operation Sharan Daji was mobilised and moved to the scene.

“Before the arrival of the joint operation team, the bandits had already carried out their operation and escaped.

“The bandits shot three persons, who sustained serious gunshot injuries namely, Bello Musa, 25; Siriki Danlami, 35; and Maawiya Musa, 25, all of Dan Hayi village.

“Furthermore, the bandits shot one Yasina Adam to death, robbed members of the community of about 50 cows and 60 sheep, and kidnapped one Shafatu Danlami and Nana Danlami to an unknown destination, but later released the said Shafaatu Danlami.

“The bandits set ablaze two grinding machines belonging to one Danlami Ibrahim, also of Dan Hayi village.”

The police prosecutor, Sergeant Lawal Bello, asked the court for an adjournment to enable the police conclude investigations.
