Senator Ahmad Babba Kaita: A Good Beginning -By Dr. Mukhtar El-kasim

Nigeria is bestowed with committed leaders who worked tirelessly towards its independence and equally laid a solid foundation for its post independence development. The doggedness Herbert Macaulay who became a very public figure when he founded the Nigerian National Democratic Party (NNDP), the first Nigerian political party on June 24, 1923. In the 1930s, Macaulay took part in organizing Nigerian nationalist militant attacks on the British colonial government in Nigeria. The Nigerian Youth Movement (NYM) founded in 1933 by Professor Eyo Ita was joined in 1936 by Nnamdi Azikiwe that sought support from all Nigerians regardless of cultural background for independence of the country. Notable personalities like Nnamdi Azikiwe, the first President of Nigeria, Sir Abubkar Tafawa Balewa, the first Prime Minister of the country, Sir Ahmadu Bello, the Premier of the Northern Region, Chief Samuel Akintola, the Premier of the Western Region and Chief Michael Okpara, the Premier of the Eastern Region among others did contribute in no small measure towards the nation building and development of their respective regions.

With the journey of Nigeria through different realms of democracy, some of the subsequent politicians followed the footsteps of the first generation ones. One of such is the charismatic, charming and one-for-all Distinguished Senator Ahmad Babba Kaita, Senator representing Katsina East Senatorial Zone. The Senator has indeed written his name with an indelible ink in the Nigeria’s polity by giving the desired representation of his people in the Red Chamber. When he was elected as the Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria following the passing away of the erstwhile Senator for the Zone, Alhaji Mustapha Bukar towards the end of the eighth Senate, he did not relent in pursuing all the Motions started by his predecessor. It is as a result of this effort that the Bill to establish a Federal Polytechnic at Daura came to fruition. This achievement has gone a long way in putting smiles not only to people of Daura and Daura Senatorial Zone but Katsina State as a whole.

Senator Babba pursued vigorously the Senate assent of the establishment of the Federal Institute of Fire Service in Katsina State. Having such an important Institute means a lot of things for the state, ranging from employment opportunities, capital flow attraction and better service delivery in fire fighting for the country to mention a few. Closely related to this, is the generation of direct employment to numerous Katsina State youths especially those from his constituency. This no doubt, indicated the resolve of the Distinguished Senator to fulfill his campaign promises of taking substantial number of the teeming unemployed youths off streets and make them more useful to themselves and to the society.

It is germane to give credit to Senator Babba for being one of the instrumental lawmakers that saw to the emergence of Senator Ahmad Lawal as Senate President. It could be recalled that the contest for the ninth Senate Presidency was hot and keen especially with the firm posture of another strong contender, Senator Ali Ndume who bent on resisting any pressure to step down for Senator Ahmad Lawal. But with the support of the powerful and frontline Senators including Senator Ahmed Babba Kaita, all the intrigues and permutations were amicably resolved using the instruments of science of politics within the context of Nigeria’s politics. He dared to see the emergence of Senator Ahmad Lawal because of his zeal to work for the success of President Muhammadu Buhari in the “Next Level”; as the Senate is critical in facilitating the policies and programmes of the Executive Arm.

Since, “adoration has started paying for the price of soap” by the good performance of the Distinguished Senator at the Red Chamber by contributing to legislative activities for the development of Nigeria. This could be seen in the role he played in fast screening of ministerial nominees sent to the Senate by Mr. President in the July this year. He equally contributed immensely in the formation of Senate Committees for easy legislative activities.

It is worth noting that the Senator owes it a duty to always keep in touch with the people of his constituency, his party and party officials in the spirit of good politics and viable representation. By so doing, he gets the views, needs and aspirations of these critical stakeholders in his political career and prepares beneficial motions and bills for the betterment of their living conditions. Also, due to the realization that harmonious working relationship with all stakeholders, Senator Ahmad Babba exhibits a good working relationship with Katsina State Government under the able leadership of Governor Rt. Hon. Aminu Bello Masari for effective governance at all levels. This is also extended to President Muhammadu Buhari and his administration especially the duo come from the same Senatorial Zone. So, Distinguished Senator keep the good work, maintain the tempo, keep the flag flying and the sky will be your beginning.
