RUTF: The magic food performing miracle on children suffering from Severe Acute Malnutrition

RUTF (Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food) is a vitamin and mineral fortified peanut paste mixed with dry milk products. It has been use as a miracle cure for children suffering from Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM).

Nigeria has the second highest burden of stunted children in the world, with a national prevalence rate of 32 percent of children under five.

An estimated 2 million children in Nigeria suffer from severe acute malnutrition (SAM), but only two out of every 10 children affected is currently reached with treatment. Seven percent of women of childbearing age also suffer from acute malnutrition.

Malnourished children usually look very thin or wasted and they have a high riskof death and illness. Treating severely malnourished children in hospitals is not always desirable or practical in rural settings, and home-based treatment may be better.

Home-based treatment can be food prepared by a caregiver (such as flour porridge or energy- and nutrient-dense locally available foods), or ready-to-use therapeutic food (RUTF) provided by a clinic. RUTF is usually made according to a standard, energy-rich composition defined by the World Health Organization (WHO).

There are four basic ingredients in RUTF which includes Sugar, Dried Skimmed Milk, Oil, Vitamins and Mineral Supplements (CMV).

In addition, up to 25% of a product’s weight can come from oil-seeds, groundnuts or cereals like oats.

As well as containing the necessary proteins, energy and micronutrients, RUTF also have attributes such as taste and texture suitable for young children need no for cooking before consumption.

Moreso, RUTF is Resistant to contamination by micro-organisms and have long shelf-life.

The categories of children that should use the RUTF include those children over six months and/or an adolescents that are severely malnourished without medical complications, have passed the appetite test, and have been enrolled in outpatient care.

Others are HIV positive, moderately malnourished without medical complications who have passed the appetite test, and have been enrolled in outpatient care, those who Can drink liquids and those that are not allergic to milk or nuts.
