Kidnapped in Kankara, rescued at Danmusa – Read how Sheikh Ahmad Suleiman spend 2 weeks in captivity

The Nigerian Army on Wednesday says sustained covert surveillance and tactical lines of operations orchestrated concurrently with other security agencies led to the rescue of Sheikh Ahmad Suleiman.

The Commander, 17 Brigade, Nigerian Army, Lt. Lukman Omoniyi, while presenting the rescued Islamic cleric to newsmen said immediately after the kidnap incidence, a marching order was given by the COAS for 17 Brigade Nigerian Army to carry out an immediate rescue operation in order to rescue the kidnapped victims.

According to him, the operation was structured to reflect robust synergy with relevant security agencies.

While reaffirming the commitment of Nigerian Army and by extension 17 Brigade to the safety of lives and property in Katsina state as well as the country at large, the Brigade relishes the ever-assuring support of the COAS particularly “as we remain professionally responsive to perform our constitutional roles always.”

It would be recalled that Sheikh Ahmad Suleiman, a renowned Islamic cleric and five others of the Jammaatul Izalatul Bidia Wa Iqamatus Sunna (JIBWIS) were kidnapped along Kakumi – Kankara Road in Kankara LGA of Katsina state on 14 March 2019.

But in an interview with Daily Trust, Sheikh Suleiman said that he was told that his family was offered N33million, but the money was not completed.

They threatened that even if the ransom was paid, they would kill us since one of them was arrested. Somehow they became very terrified.

On the night before their release, the kidnappers asked them to quickly wear our shoes and come out as they learned that a group was coming to attack them because of us.

“We were escorted to a remote location by two of them who were not carrying any weapon, with the intention that if it was confirmed that it was that other group they fought earlier, they would show us where we would follow to escape.

“It was later realized that those who came were the people that would take us to swap with the mother of the leader of the gang, who was arrested for that purpose.

“That was how we were brought, on one side by the kidnapers, and on the other side, the security agents brought the mother of the gang leader and we were swapped in the presence of some military personnel at Danmusa in Katsina State.

“We learned that the mother spent seven days in the hands of the security agents because she initially denied that the man was her son. But eventually, that was the reason for our freedom.” He said.
