Alarming: New data crown Katsina 5th most poverty State in Nigeria

The growing level of the poverty rate in Nigeria is alarming as the country, according to a report by Brookings Institution, recently overtook India as the nation with the highest number of extremely poor people.

Months after Nigeria took over from India as the poverty capital of the world, the World Poverty Clock created by Vienna-based World Data Lab put the number of Nigerians living with extreme poverty at 88,011,759.

According to the World Poverty Clock, “the outlook for poverty alleviation in Nigeria is currently weak,” with nearly six people slipping into extreme poverty every minute.

It was gathered that the World Bank, IMF, United Nations, forecast that Nigeria will not hit the 2030 target for ending global poverty.

Further study also indicates that Nigeria’s poverty level is more concentrated in some states in the country than the other.

Below is a list of the states with the high poverty rate in Nigeria:

1. Zamfara state – 92%

2. Jigawa state – 88%

3. Bauchi state – 87%

4. Kebbi state – 86%

5. Katsina state – 82.2%

6. Taraba state – 78%

7. Gombe state – 77%

8. Ebonyi state – 56%

9. Plateau state – 51.6%
