Katsina state government is to conduct a census of physically challenged and mentally retarded persons in the state, the Senior Special Assistant to the governor on physically challenged, Muntari Sani Dutsinma has said.
Speaking at a meeting, convened to discuss modalities on how best to ensure the success of the exercise, Dutsinma said the purpose of the census was to provide data that could help government properly plan for the vulnerable group.
According to him, the data can also assist Non-Governmental Organisations and wealthy individuals to look at several avenues they could key in to assist the needy in the state.
He said a training programme had been arranged for those who would carry out the exercise.
Dutsinma called for the cooperation of those who would be counted adding that the government has already provided logistics for the exercise.
“These vulnerable groups have never had it so good like under this administration, many of us have enjoyed vocational training, empowerment packages and are beginning to become self-reliant,” he said.
Arewa Trust reports that the meeting was attended by various stakeholders like the National population commission and various chairmen of associations of people with different kinds of disabilities.
