Red handed: Man arrested stealing electric cable, meter in Katsina

A middle-aged man, Bishir Suleiman, of the Sabuwar Unguwa Quarters within the Katsina metropolis, is currently in trouble over alleged theft of meters and cables belonging to the Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO).

Bishir Suleiman, who is currently on bail, has been summoned to appear before a Katsina Senior Magistrates’ Court on February 5, 2019, when the case is scheduled to come up before Hajiya Fadile Dikko.

He is to be arraigned for criminal conspiracy and vandalism of KEDCO metres and theft under sections 97 and 287 of the Penal Code and 1 (10) of the Miscellaneous Offences Act.

The accused was arrested by Inspector Abdu Yakubu of the Criminal Investigation Department and taken to the Sabongari Police Station, Katsina, after the items were allegedly found on him.

According to the police, he was arrested at the Fagachi Quarters in Katsina.

Suleiman was apprehended while allegedly removing some KEDCO meters and cables from where they were installed. One KEDCO metre cover was also recovered from him at the scene of the crime.

The court further heard on Thursday that Suleiman confessed to committing the crime during interrogation.

He also reportedly named one Babangida, who is now at large, as his accomplice.

The police prosecutor, Inspector Sani Ado, said investigation had been completed, adding that he was awaiting legal advice from the state Ministry of Justice.
