An 81-year old man arrested with fake dollars in Katsina
An octogenarian, Abdurrahman Amadu of Tora village in Kafur Local Government Area of Katsina State, will on January 16, 2019 be arraigned before a Federal High Court in Katsina for alleged possession of counterfeit dollars.
A legal advice from the state Ministry of Justice stated that a prima facie case had been established against the suspect who is believed to be 8-year-old, noting that he allegedly committed the offence, which is contrary to Section 9 (f) of the Penal Code and Section 5(a),(b) and (c) of the Counterfeit Currency Special Provision Act, LFN,2004.
It consequently recommended his trial at the Federal High Court.
The legal advice read in part, “That for the 1st suspect to have collected 41 pieces and before his arrest, used seven pieces, which he could not give their account, means that he had a bad intention.”
The 81-year old Amadu has been remanded in the Katsina prison till January 16, 2019, when his case will come up before Senior Magistrate Hajiya Fadila Dikko.
The legal advice exonerated the second accused person, Usman Yahaya of Farin Yaro Quarters, Katsina.
The 49-year-old Yahaya, who is a manager at a Bureau De Change in Katsina, according to the legal advice, acted in good faith, which Amadu reportedly took advantage of.
The police had earlier told the magistrates’ court that 34 pieces of the suspected counterfeit US dollars were found in Amadu’s possession during a body search.
Amadu reportedly confessed during interrogation that he received 41 pieces of the currency from Yahaya, out of which he had utilised seven notes.
The police prosecutor, Inspector Sani Ado, told the court on Thursday that Amadu was “awaiting charge.”
He requested for an adjournment and Dikko directed that Amadu should be remanded in prison custody till January 16, 2019.
