NEWMAP: Katsina State Government Assures Of Safe Environment

The Katsina State Government says it is committed to ensuring a safer, cleaner, and habitable environment across the 34 local government areas of the state.

Commissioner for Environment, Hamza Suleiman, stated this on Monday at an evaluation meeting with the World Bank Supervision Mission of Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project, NEWMAP.

According to the Commissioner, Katsina State is one among states in the arid and semi-arid sub region of the country facing serious challenges of water scarcity and environmental degradation ranging from deforestation, desert encroachment, drought, loss of agricultural land, forest and biodiversity and currently under the threat of extreme climatic weather which the State Government has been addressing.

He stressed that with NEWMAP’s intervention in addressing the environmental challenges in the state, the current administration is keen on sustaining the project, long after its exit from the state.

Similarly, the Speaker State House of Assembly, Yahaya Kusada, assured of lawmakers readiness to continue enacting friendly laws regarding climate change.

The National Project Coordinator of NEWMAP, Dahiru Salisu and the Leader World Bank Technical Team, Dr. Joy Agene, praised Katsina State as one of the leading states in project implementation across 19 states where the program is established. They called on other states to look up to Katsina as a role model.

According to the Environment Commissioner, due to insufficient funds about 118 communities across the state have so far benefited from the intervention programme.
