– Katsina gov’t to establish new agency to tackle flood erosion
Katsina state government is to establish an Erosion and Flood management Agency to succeed the world Bank Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management project (NEWMAP) when the project exists, Daily trust reports.
The state commissioner for Environment, Hamza Faskari who disclosed this the commencement of four day joint due diligence and implementation support mission of NEWMAP in Katsina said the present and existing structure will transform into the agency for sustainability of the project.
According to him, it is only in Katsina that already exist a law that stipulates both state and it’s 34 local governments contributing nothing less than two percent of their monthly stipulated allocations into a dedicated account for tackling ecological problems and challenges.
He said, before the coming of NEWMAP, the state has been implementing various projects to do with Gully Restoration, Storm Water and Flood protection noting that over 3,000 complains from communities were received and being attended to in phases’.
“From 2015 to 2017 we have addressed these challenges in 118 communities at a cost of over N7b” he added.
In his remarks, the National Project coordinator, NEWMAP Joy Agne said the projects is securing additional 400m USD and urged state’s to key in by making necessary legislative arrangements and commitments.
