Katsina ex-Governor Shema laments deplorable state of education in Nigeria

Former Governor of Katsina State, Ibrahim Shehu Shema has lamented the deplorable state of education in Nigeria and urged both the federal government and state governments in the country to set aside certain amount of their income on monthly basis to fund educational sector in the country in other to solve persistent problem confronting the sector in Nigeria.

Ibrahim Shehu Shema disclosed this at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Department of Political Science and International Studies 50th Anniversary International Conference, where he was honoured by the Institution as Distinguish Alumni.

Shema said the model of educational development he advocates for both the Federal and State governments is what enabled his administration to offered free education including payment of WAEC,  NECO and NABTEB examination fees  for all students in public schools through out his 8 years tenure as Governor of Katsina State.

Shema who bagged three degrees from the ABU Zaria, said his administration also sponsored over 800 students for studies abroad in critical field of studies such as Medicine, Pharmacy, Engineering etc, with 100 percent payment of all the expenses by the State government. He said with concerted effort and total commitment by the government an end can be put to incessant strike of lecturers in our academic institutions.

Also the Vice Chancellor of ABU Zaria, Prof Ibrahim Garba recalled that he was under immense pressure on the clearance of academic record of Senator Dino Melaye when he had issue with his academic record at the Senate with some people accusing him of collecting money from the Senator.

He said he played the role he played because in every society people with different ideology help the society to develop,  as he acknowledged that Senator Dino Melaye who is an alumni of Department of Political Science of the institution has always work for its development.

The guest speaker at the Conference,  former Inspector General of Police,  Solomon Aranse said no country can tackle its security challenges without consent of its people.

He said Nigeria government find itself in this present state of insecurity because the role of traditional institutions on security matters has been neglected.
