Primaries: Fresh crisis brews in Katsina APC as Akida faction threatens legal action

A factional group in the ruling APC in Katsina State, APC Akida, has threatened to take legal action against the party if it adopts indirect primaries in the state.

A founding secretary of the group, Barrister Abbas A. Machika, expressed dissatisfaction with the decision adopted by the APC to conduct primaries using two different methods at the national and state levels.

Machika said there was no power in the APC Constitution that allowed APC state chapters of the party to conduct primaries into any elective office.

He said, “Such decision by the NEC of APC is not exciting if one looks at the possible legal consequences that may follow if implemented. Now, you have issues with contending forces in a given state, for example Katsina.

“In Katsina State some people were excluded (during congresses) even though they purchased forms and met all the necessary requirements.

After they were excluded, they petitioned the party and after the party failed to do the right thing they went to court. We have four pending cases including one before a court of appeal challenging the primaries,” he said.
