Katsina Zone: Meet the 5 major contenders that may replace Senator Nzirebe in 2019
As the drums of politics are sounding, 2019 general election is getting closer day-by-day. Various political parties are preparing for intraparty competition, known as primary election. Its a time for each and every political party to breed up a credible and competent candidate that will remain the flag bearer champion to contest in the upcoming 2019 general election.
However, previous 2015 general election paved a way for opposition to believe that there is an elements of credibility and certain degree of fairness for them to seize power. Its partially believed that political ragging, thuggery and malpractices are varnished and will never return to Nigeria.
Katsina is a presidential state with higher number of APC candidates that occupied political offices. There are three senatorial zones in the state; which include Katsina north, Katsina central an Katsina South. Katsina central is represented by Ibrahim Umaru Kurfi under the shade of the ruling party, APC.
However, Katsinapost conducted a research and found some powerful political elements, both within and outside the ruling party that may compete Senator Inzerebe in primary and general election.
1. Ibrahim Ida: was a former senator representing Katsina senatorial constituency in the Senate between 2007 and 2011 on the platform of the largest current political party, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). As a civil servant, he rose to the position of permanent secretary in the Ministry of Defence, Economic Affairs office in the Presidency and the Petroleum Trust Fund, PTF.
Senator Ida is a strong personality with political tactics. He was “Dan Majen Katsina” before the recent traditional tittle of “Sardaunan Katsina” a litle bit after former Nigerian Inspector of police, Ibrahim Ahmadu Comarsi’s bereavement.
Ida’s political leverage is far beyond expectations, he took much time in administrative aspect f politics; meaning, as an implementer and executor of governmental policies and projects up to the peak of federal civil service. This might aid Ibrahim’s political career in competing his counterpart contestants of the Katsina central senatorial district.
It was of recent, Ibrahim Ida decamped from the Peoples Democratic party (PDP) to the ruling party, All Progressive Congress (APC) for the alleged reasons of its inability to tackle critical problems and monumental corruption in it’s 16 years of ruling.
Senator Ibrahim Ida, is a knowledgeable personality with political ambition of Paramount importance, he remained an unshakable pillar within the ruling party that might compete the incumbent senator and win over him.
Ibrahim Ida is financially capable and politically vibrant. His recent decampment to the ruling party is one of the key indicators of his political strategies. Being Katsina presidential state is an additional boon for the ruling party to remain flag bearer of its stand in the upcoming 2019 general election.
2. Abdul’aziz Yar’adua: is the son of the former minister of Lagos in first republic late Musa Yar’adua, when it was the capital of Nigeria, a younger brother to late Shehu Musa Yar’adua, retired major general and later democrat and younger brother of Late President Umaru Musa Yar’adua who served as governor of Katsina State between 1999 to 2007 and president between 2007 to 2010 when he died in office.
Yar’adua was a lieutenant colonel in the Nigerian Army before he retired and joined partisan politics in Katsina. He became the running mate of Senator Yakubu Lado Dan Marke, a gubernatorial candidate of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) in the 2011 elections.
Abduaziz reported to be the closest brother of late president Alhaji Umaru Musa Yar’adua among their family. His brother’s demise is among the key issues that triggers him to indulge in politics.
Yar’adua’s family rose with the history of victory and success, especially in political career. His family’s victory and determination might pave a way for his political ambition in politics.
As a retired lieutenant, financial aspect might be seems to be his wimpness; as a member of Yar’adua’s family, with history of his father, brothers and two of his niece married to the former governors, fiscal knot will never find a resting spot in his family.
Yar’adua might seems to have double-barrelled benefits; firstly, his being closest brother to late Yar’adua, secondly, his being a member of Yar’adua’s family
3. Muttaqha Rabe Darma: was the Executive Secretary, Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) and former commissioner and godson to the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua.
He is reported to be currently engaged in programmes
that promote youth empowerment and educational development in the state; some of which include being one of the founding father of Pleasant Library and Book Club.
He hails from Katsina council area. His charismatic demeanor and youth follower ship is an adeded advantage for him. Being a ‘Yar’adua boy’ as he and others are often called, endears him to the late president’s supporters and associates.
His weakness may however be on the financial side. But up to now he did not make his decision to run publicly.
4. Engineer Kabir Abdullahi Barkiya: was a Former Managing Director of Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA) a matrix organization.
He hailed from Kurfi local government, he was a governorship candidate against former governor of Katsina state Barr. Ibrahim Shehu Shema under the shade of PDP.
Engineer Barkiya took a little while dancing in political arena. He got the technicality of knowing how in politics. His decampment of All progressive Congress shines his political career.
Barkiya never seems to have financial difficulties that might hobble him against his political ambition. He is capable, strong with support of various organizations.
Engineer Kabir has already disclosed his political ambition to vie a seat of senator in Katsina Central senatorial constituency in his interview with Triumph.
5. Ibrahim Lawal Dankaba: He was former chairman of Kaita local government and he was chairman of the Association for Local Government in Nigeria, (ALGON) Katsina State chapter during PDP’s administration.
Dankaba is among the top three people that the Katsina state government is alleging over 11 billion embezzlement during Shema’s administration.
However, Ibrahim is hailed from Kaita local government area, and what seems to be aiding him is regenerating of important personality by largest opposition party,Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
He was former chairman of a local government and former chairman of ALGON, finance would never seems to be his problem in achieving his political target.
