The officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) reportedly began investigating a case of wanton corruption in the Department of Higher Education, Katsina State ministry of Education.
According to our source, an online local newspaper in the state – Taskar Labarai (www.taskarlabarai.com) – a whistle blower in the department leaked the corruption case to the EFCC sometimes ago after which the commission swing into action almost immediately.
Taskar Labarai who uncovered the news and published it online in Hausa reports that the alleged corruption act was perpetuated when the current Commissioner of Education Alhaji Badamasi Lawal Charanchi was heading the department as Special Adviser to the Governor and EFCC had already invited those accused for questioning.
Also, according to our source the corruption case being investigated by the EFCC is about the money (in millions) the state government budgeted for the state’s students on scholarship abroad but were deposited in a private account.
When contacted for comment, one of the accused culprit admitted to have deposited the money in a private account but insisted that it was not with the intention of laundering.
Effort to get the ministry’s reaction proves abortive as the ministry’s Public Relations Officer decline to comment on the issue.
The department of Higher Education is now being headed by Comrade Bashir Ruwangodiya.
