PRESS RELEASE

ON THE KATSINA NORTH SENATORIAL BY ELECTION (DAURA ZONE) HELD ON 11TH AUGUST, 2018

Gentlemen of the Press

INTRODUCTION

The Katsina North Senatorial By Election of 11th August, 2018 has come and gone but not without many anomalies, challenges, malpractices and a certain degree of partisanship on the part of the Election Umpire, the Independent National Electoral Commission ( INEC). We have therefore carefully analysed all the challenges we faced in the Course of this Election and present them as follows:

1. Threatening of Civil Servants from the Senatorial District

On the eve of the election day, all the Civil Servants under the Service of Katsina State and Local Governments in the Senatorial District were threatened by Government of Aminu Bello Masari with loss of their jobs if APC looses in their domains. They were each given #20,000 to compliment whatever efforts they would put to see that APC wins.

2. The Coercing of Traditional Institutions

All traditional Institutions in the Senatorial District were coerced into working for the Successes of the APC by the Government of Aminu Bello Masari.

3. Votes Buying

The APC Government of Aminu Bello Masari voted #250, 000 per Polling unit for the purchase of votes from unsuspecting members of the public who have already been impoverished and made beggars by the unpopular government policies in the last three years. We have evidences of vote buying in places accross the Senatorial District.

4. Partisanship of INEC staff

Majority of INEC ADHOC Staff were sourced from the University. Whether covertly Or unknowingly they were recruited on the basis of their allegiance to APC. They were the Local Government and Ward Collation officers.

The allegiance of the Corps members cannot be ascertained but the same cannot be said about other students and staff drawn from tertiary Institutions in the state who have been understood to be loyal to the ruling APC.

5. Ballot Box Snatching

There were instances of Ballot box snatching in some local governments notably, Mani, Sandamu, Kusada and Kankia LGA’s.

6. Voter Intimidation and Harassment

In many Polling units Government and their agents went round intimidating voters and harrassing them and forcing them to vote for the APC.

7. Alteration of Results Sheets

Many results sheets from Polling Units in many LGA’s were altered and doctored.

Conclusion

I wish to conclude that, the bye-election of 11th August, 2018 is any where not free, fair and credible. We wish to state categorically that we are going to challenge the elections through all known lawful processes.

HONOURABLE SALISU YUSUF MAJIGIRI
