The Katsina State Saving One Million Lives programme being run by the State ministry of health under the leadership of Honorable Mariyatu Bala Usman – the Commissioner for Health has defeated Kano, Kaduna, Kebbi and Sokoto States to clinched the North West zonal Champion award as the 2017 year runs out.

This is contained in the end of the year result of the programme assessment and performance parameters across thematic areas released by the programme coordinators in the Federal Ministry of Health recently.

The SOML is a program being implemented by the APC  administration as part of its commitment towards saving the lives of women and children.

To achieve this, the program has constructed modern incinerators in some of the SOML supported facilities, for proper waste management.

Locum Doctors and Nurse/Midwives were also contracted by the program to serve at the SOML supported facilities in each of the 34 LGAs of the state, for the benefit of rural populace.

The SOML program officer, coordinating Katsina Zone; Hajia Jamila Abdu Mani added that the monthly integrated supportive supervision and the follow up visits being supported by the program is yielding a positive result and also impacting on the livelihood of the communities. According to her, the Honourable Commissioner for Health; Hajia Mariatu Bala Usman has given the program officers all the necessary logistics and moral supports to ensure the success of the program.

“We intervened at Tsagero Town of Rimi Local Government Area, where we activated a health facility that has been dormant for many years during  the SOML second line health facility assessment, the facility was in a bad shape with equipment dumped for many years in the facility store, while some have already expired without usage.  The health facility is now functional with all the necessary equipment and manpower required for a health facility to operate , the program officer added.

Procurement of  solar powered Blood Bank had been initiated with delivery expected in Q1 of 2018 for installation in identified SOML supported facilities that have trained & qualified personnel.

Also Latest HP laptop computers have been procured for all the 34 LGA M&E officers in the state with the aim of improving monitoring and evaluation system as well as data evaluationIn a recent performance management assessment done by the National SOML, Katsina State Saving One Million Lives program for results scored 100% compared to 55% & 99% scored in Q1 & Q2 of the year 2017 respectively.

The program is measured based on increase in the combined coverage of six key health indicators namely: vaccination coverage among young children; contraceptive prevalence rate (modern methods); Vitamin A supplementation among children 6 months to 5 years of age; use of skilled birth attendance; HIV counselling and testing among women attending antenatal care; and lastly, use of insecticide treated nets (ITNs) by children under the age of 5 years.
