The Katsina state government has on Thursday, the 10th of May, 2018 launched its smart agricultural initiatives aimed at promoting agricultural activities and boosting food security.

Alhaji Mannir Yakubu, the state deputy governor who doubles as the  commissioner  announced this during the formal launching of the program in Katsina.

He said the program was aimed at stressing the state government commitments and determination towards the development of agriculture.

The commissioner noted that ten programs had been lined up under the program which include, farmers Data information system which covers one million registered farmers, “adding that the data would from time to time revalidated and updated.

He added that under the program the 2018 seasonal rainfall for Katsina state had been worked out.

He said other areas were establishment of inagro-metrology and Automatic weather stations AWS and the 40 CP mobile soil laboratory, “adding we would also provide logistical supports to our teaming extension workers as well as establish the state sustainable platform for agriculture (KASPA).

Yakubu said other areas of concern were the determination of the government to translate into vernacular (Hausa) the state agricultural restoration program.

He added that seedlings would be distributed under the 2018 wet season improved seeds procurement and supply to farmers at subsidized rates, “we would revisit and implement the 2017 agricultural project survey as well as mechanized the entire agricultural sector.

According to him the ministry has in the last three years implemented numerous policies inline with the state agricultural program, stressing that the programs had impacted positively on the peasant farmers through bumper harvest and encouraged livestock productivity.

He said the activities were rehabilitation of 4 water Dams and 20 irrigation schemes and drilling of 390 warship bore and 177 tube wells at affordable rates to the farmers, “adding we supported the farmers with free water pumping machines.

He said within the period under review government had procured 700 tons of assorted seedlings which were sold to farmers at a reasonable rates, “adding we have also distributed 100,000 tons of inorganic fertilizer to farmers.

Yakubu noted that agro inputs were distributed  to the 425 N-Power extension agents,and resuscitated extension services through procurement 7 brand new Toyota Hilux vehicles,19 motorcycles for the staff under IFAD and repaired 15 vehicles for the katsina state agricultural development project KATARDA.

The scribe of the African ministry said 2000 women farmers  were trained and supported with Knapsa sprayers and protective jackets.

He added that another 500 farmers were trained on good agronomic practice GAP, stressing we have also sponsored seven staff of the ministry for training on rice production and processing in Thailand and Japan.
