The House of Representatives yesterday passed for second reading a bill seeking to establish a federal polytechnic in Malumfashi, Katsina State, Daily Trust reports.

Sponsored by Babangida Ibrahim (APC, Katsina) the bill provides that it is significant to establish ahigher institution of learning in Malumfashi to cater for the Katsina South senatorial district, which currently has none.

Leading debate on the bill, Ibrahim said it would promote a planned and balanced economic development sustained by applied sciences, technology and management courses.

The lawmaker said: “It is amazing and incredible to state that there is no single tertiary institution in the whole of this senatorial zone in spite of its abundant human and natural resources that contribute to economic development of Katsina State and Nigeria at large.”

Speaker Yakubu Dogara referred the bill to the House Committee on Tertiary Education and Services for further action.
