The Katsina state house of assembly has called for the suspension of quarry activities at Kwanar-Are dam site in Fadima Village, Rimi Local government area.

This formed part of the recommendations of the committee on environment and emergency relief on environmental disaster caused to some communities in Rimi Local Government by Mother-Cat Quarry activities at Kwanar-Are.

The report which was presented to the house by the acting chairman of the committee, Sani Lawal Baure listed other recommendations include payment of compensation to the affected communities by the company.

The lawmakers also urged Government to ensure that companies in the state follow quarry activities.

The house further called on the companies to ensure installing standard and functioning sirens at all quarry sites in the state.

Some of the findings of the committee during the visit according to Sani Lawal include establishing the fact that Mother Cat Company had totally excavated the surface rock thereby living the dam with the possibility of spilling anytime soon.

The committee also observed cracks in most houses in the communities caused by frequent blasting activities in the area.

The communities also testify that the companies are not executing meaningful community’s development projects as a means of compensation to them.

The speaker, Abubakar Yahya Kusada announced the resolution to the house and directed the clerk to forward the resolution to the executive arm.
