Sultan sends strong message to Islamic clerics in Katsina

Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III, Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar, has called on Islamic clerics in the country to shun materialism and flamboyant lifestyles not consistent with the teachings of Islam.

Speaking yesterday in Katsina at the opening ceremony of the 32nd Quranic National Competition, Abubakar said materialism and flamboyant lifestyle does not portray piety before the followership as clerics are supposed to lead by example.

Represented by the Emir of Katsina Abdulmumin Kabir Usman, the sultan said a decent lifestyle is what was needed by scholars that could serve as guidance for the followership.

“It is unfortunate that today most of our Imams have shun the true teaching of Islam. They are busy pursuing materialism, which has no basis in Islam. It only generates more harm than good among the society.

“Don’t allow materialism to overshadow you. Islam has always been the pillar for any societal development, so we need to do more in encouraging and supporting its propagation in order to yield a better society,” he said.

According to him, Islam is a modest religion that encourages decency and respect for each other noting that all good Muslims are enjoined to adhere to its teaching and guiding principles for a better society.

Earlier, the state governor Aminu Masari said his administration is considering reviewing the Islamic education bureau law with a view to re position the and regulate the operation of the islamiyya and tsangaya schools in the state.

About 256 participants from 33 state’s and the FCT are taking part in the competition.
