The Katsina state government has announced its plan to construct 150 housing unit. The decision was made known after the weekly meeting of the state’s executive council. However, the news was received by mixed reactions, mostly negative.

Many people have expressed reservations over the cost of the project which is estimated to gulf around 1.93 billion Naira. This means each unit will consume not less than 12 million Naira. Therefore, challenge the rationale of constructing a ‘low cost” at such humongous amount.

”Unless it is for the elites, the middle-class whose the project is meant to cater for, could not afford it” wrote by one commenter.

Another perspective was muted by a prominent figure in the social media circle and convener, Katsina leadership Forum, Engr. Abu Aminu. He expressed concern that, the proposed project will end up being at the hands of the wealthy few as was the practice before.

“Many times government use over a billion Naira to construct housing estate, but the units end up in the hands of few wealthy individuals who have more than one”.

He advise the government to make a provision of new layout with one thousand plots. The billions to construct the housing estate should be channelled to build roads, mosques, islamiyya schools, a market, fire and police stations and supply water and electricity.

As at the the filing of this report, the details are still obscure. Whether the Masari led administration will look at the reactions of the people and act appropriately remain to be seen.
