The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Katsina State says it is not aware of the defection of a former speaker of the House of Assembly, Umar Yau Gwajo-Gwajo, since it has not officially received a notification letter. Dailytrust reports.

However, Gwajo-Gwajo said he had “duly notified” the PDP leadership on Sunday morning ahead of his formal defection ceremony held at Mai’adua town.

The state PDP chairman, Salisu Majigiri, said there were procedures for leaving and entering a political party, stressing that it was illegal to belong to two parties at the same time.

“If you are to leave, you are expected to officially write, telling the party of the decision to relinquish your membership just like Atiku did to the APC before his move to the PDP. Up till now, we don’t have such a letter at either ward or state level.

“All we know is that he (Gwajo-Gwajo) took Governor Aminu Bello Masari to Gwajo-Gwajo and made noise. There is no any letter to indicate his defection. When we get it, we shall then respond accordingly,” he said.

In his reaction, Gwajo-Gwajo said the PDP only wanted to claim ignorance of the letter sent to the ward level.

“I notified them. And even that is just by the way because there is no provision where one is asked to write before joining or leaving a party; go and check the constitution.

“My reasons for decamping have to do with the urge for development of my area. I realised that we are losing so much and my joining will lead to greater things for my people. More so, the qualitative leadership styles of President Muhammadu Buhari and Governor Masari are exceptional,” he added.
