No fewer than 340 women of reproductive age die from maternal deaths in Katsina State this year, 25 less than the 365 recorded in 2016 in the state, with Daura Local Government recording the highest— 54 deaths. Vanguard Reports

This was contained in a report by the Maternal and Pre-Natal Death Surveillance and Response, MPDSR, committee presented at a one-day workshop convened by Katsina State Maternal and Newborn Health Accountability Mechanism Forum, KATSMAF, yesterday.

The report said the 340 deaths recorded among the reproductive women was generated from 18 facilities between January and September.

It said between January and September, of the total number of 21,302 births across 18 general hospitals in Katsina State, 340 deaths were recorded.

The report said Daura consistently topped the chart, followed by general hospitals in Dutsinma and Malumfashi, which came second and third, with maternal death cases of 42 and 32 respectively.

An analysis of the report indicated that 212 of the deaths were among women aged between 25 and 40 years, while 101 deaths were recorded among women between the ages of 19 and 21 years.

The analysis also showed that 67 of the women who died, were between the ages of 16 and 18.

MPDSR is intervening in 18 health facilities (General Hospital) of Katsina, Turai Yar’Adua, Jibia, Batsari, Kurfi, Danmusa, Dutsinma, Kankara, Funtua, Malumfashi, MCH Malumfashi, Musawa, Kankia, Daura, Rimi, Mani, Baure and Ingawa.
