The 426 arms recovered from illegal owners in Katsina State were destroyed publicly on Tuesday.
The exercise was aimed at mopping up illegal arms in the state and establishing a sustainable check to the proliferation of small arms and light weapons.
The state Governor, Aminu Masari representive the Secretary to the State Government, Inuwa Mohammed, said the programme had recorded huge success as seen in the voluntary surrender of illicit SALW by repentant miscreants and criminals across the state.
He also added that the programme had been a strategy aimed at reducing crime in the state including kidnapping, armed robbery, cultism and other crimes and vices who he said are now declining by each pasing day.
Alhaji Mustapha Inuwa also stated that the programme is in partnership with the Presidential Committee on Small Arms and Light Weapons/ECOWAS-EU small arms project.
The governor declared “We have been informed that this partnership will provide micro projects in selected communities and individuals who have keyed in; we are ready to make available the communities and people involved to benefit.”
