Why we stopped automatic payment of WAEC and NECO – Masari

The Katsina State Governor Alhaji Aminu Bello Masari has explained why he cancelled and reverted some policies of the former administration headed by Barrister Ibrahim Shehu Shema when he came on board in 2015 including the automatic payment of WAEC and NECO to secondary school final year students.

Speaking at a lecture on the state’s 30th anniversary, the Governor stated that: “With our coming on board, we amended the policy and introduced the Qualifying Examinations. Though many people grumbled, the results indicate drastic improvement”.

He also stated that, in 2015, so many promising and qualified local government staff were dismissed from the Unified Local Government Service without any cogent reason.

“As at today, the state government has reinstated 1,871 out of 1,904 staff that were verified and cleared. The remaining 33 will soon be verified and cleared before the commencement of payment of salaries. The government has committed the sum of N131,049,334.14 for payment of salaries and three months arrears in respect of the reinstated staff of the local governments”, he said.

He said the administration inherited a policy where the state government was spending so much on examination fees with no commensurate results.

In an effort to ensure judicious utilization of public funds, Masari said the present administration continued and completed the projects it inherited before embarking on new ones, noting that the administration is committed to the advancement of the state.
