Katsina United boost survival hopes after 2-0 home win against Sunshine Stars

Katsina United achieved a big step in their bid to stay up in the NPFL after they avenged a 2-0 loss at Sunshine Stars in the first round of the season.

Striker Chinedu Udechukwu’s brace helped hosts Katsina United to defeat a resolute Sunshine Stars inside the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium in Katsina.

Katsina United have now won 14 of 18 home games played thus far.

They have now shut to 13th position on the NPFL table with 49 points from 36 games.

They will host already relegated Remo Stars in their next game.

Sunshine Stars, on the other hand, dropped to 14th position with 48 points.

The game started with a very high intensity and it was the home team who were the better side as they controlled the pace of the game from the middle of the park in the first 10 minutes.

The referee pointed at the penalty spot after Alabi Adeniyi handled the ball in his goal area and Chinedu Udechukwu brilliantly converted the spot kick in the 13th minute to increase his goals’ tally to eight.

The Akure club fought hard to get the equalising goal, but they were repelled by the strong defence of Katsina United, who were without the dependable Timothy Danladi.

Ojo Ekundayo came close on 19th minutes to restore parity for the visitors, but his left-footed strike was too weak to trouble goalkeeper Yinka David, who was virtually on holidays in the first half.

Martins Usule close range strike on 20th minutes would have increased Katsina United lead, but his effort crashed against the crossbar.

Just a minute into first half stoppage time, Sunshine goalkeeper Ariyo David made another world-class save to stop Usule’s goal-bound header on 45 minutes as the first half ended 1 -0 in favour of the hosts.

Eight minutes into the second half, Usule won another penalty for Katsina United after he was hacked down in the box by Kelechi Ogoh and Udechukwu again stepped forward to complete his brace for the day. He has now netted nine goals of the season.

Sunshine Stars made all their three substitutes but the changes could not salvage a result for them at the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium in Katsina.
