A Katsina Magistrate’s Court has remanded one Qamariya Ismail, 25, and her mother, Hassana Sabi’u, 45, for allegedly conniving and killing a day-old baby by dumping it in a dustbin.
They are facing charges of culpable homicide criminal conspiracy and causing death of a baby girl, contrary to sections 97 and 235 of penal code law.
The Presiding Magistrate, Fadilla Dikko, ordered the accused to be remanded in prison till September 28 when their case would come up for mention.
The police prosecuting officer, Sani Ado, had told the court that the matter was still under investigation.
Daily Trust reports that Qamariya and Hassana were earlier arrested by police when a dead female baby was found inside a dust bin at Madugu House along Yahaya Madaki Way, in Katsina metropolis.
According to police spokesman then, DSP Gambo Isah, investigation was later carried out and the abandoned corpse of the baby was traced to Qamariya of Sabuwar Kasuwa quarters Katsina whom her neighbours knew was having an illicit pregnancy.
He said the suspect, when arrested, confessed that her mother helped her in throwing the baby inside the garbage can.
But the mother denied any wrongdoing, insisting that what her daughter had was a still born.
