REVEALED! Why we can’t conduct LG election- Masari

The Katsina State Government said that a pending court case and  financial constraints of its 34 local government councils are some of the reasons chairmanship and councillorship elections could not be conducted.

The immediate past local government chairmen in the state had dragged the Governor Aminu Bello Masari-led administration to court challenging their dissolution.

The Katsina State High Court had ruled in favour of the government before the dissolved chairmen took the case further to the Appeal Court which slated November this year for hearing.

Governor Masari, who disclosed why he could organize the council polls during a stakeholders meeting on local government administration, said as a former legislator who made laws, it would be ungodly to be seen to be breaking such laws by his person.

“I’m ever ready to conduct the election and grant the councils full autonomy,” he said.

Masari said it was worrisome that at present, only 17 of the 34 local government areas in the state were in  the position to  pay salaries only, while the rest can’t meet up that basic responsibility.

He said agitations for local government election was good, but the councils were virtually broke, saying there were currently indebted to the state to the tune of over N9b.
