OPINION: On The Proposed Katsina Local Governments Summit – By Engr. Abu Aminu
I read in a National Daily, that His Excellency will soon Summon A Local Government Summit. I think he was ill advised.
In my own opinion, we dont need a Summit on Local Governments. Because We cant restructure them, we cant abrogate them.
His Excellency Gov. Masari should take the bold Step of Telling us Our options and his Decision on the LGs. He is our Governor, we Trusted him, we like him that’s why we Voted for him. We should be able to believe his instincts and decisions not only on this, even on bitter decisions.
Secondly, the inability of the Local Govts to pay salaries is not his ‘Concern’. And should not be a reason not conduct LG Elections.
Many states have Over 10 months salary backlog in 2015, but Governorship Elections were conducted. The “laws may be different but common sense is mostly Universal” (AA 2017)
Who knows if PMB will decide to give LGs bailout too.
Those aspiring to be LG Chairmen should be able to Stabilise the Various LGs. Make them (LGs) Viable. I know many people who if given the opportunity will take their LGs out of the ‘State Burden’ list. It all depends on the Chairman.
In conclusion, the Local Governments Election should hold soon, let the Aspirants know what they are going into. And then his Excellency may decide to be given ‘bail outs’ in special Cases.
