A Peoples Democratic Party PDP chieftain Umar Abdullahi Tsauri popularly known as ‘Tata’ has been arraign in court for allegedly violating an agreement entered with the police to cancel a rally ahead of Mashi/ Dutsi house of representatives bye election.
Tata who was arrested and detained by police on the eve of the election had written an undertaken to shelve his proposed rally in view of what the police called incitement of public disturbance.
The charges for which Tata was arraigned include organizing a campaign durbar rally in Dutsi to round up election campaign in the area and also distributing food items to people tagged ‘A Kure Yunwa’ that was deemed threatening that might ignite chaos.
Speaking with newsmen shortly after granting him bail, Umar Tata accused Governor Masari of deliberately arresting him without violating any law.
According to him, PDP had followed the guidelines in it campaign process as provided in the bye-laws of INEC. “We wrote an official application letter which was signed by the chairman seeking to inform the police on our planned rally scheduled on 18th May, 2017 at 4pm. It was assumed that the letter has covered whatever concerned here because the law allowed us to do that.”
On allegedly organizing durbar rally without security approval, Umar Tata took time to explain “As we went down to Dutsi we specifically wrote a letter signed by the party chairman to the DPO of Dutsi Local Government informing him about our closing campaign rally upon which we planned to organize a durbar, So traditionally and administratively I think we followed a due process.’’
He however said, they have informed the police and INEC grant them permission to start campaigning. Umar Tata disclosed that he still doesn’t know the actual cause of his arrest. “I still don’t know why I was charged but may be the idea was just to send me out of Dutsi, which they have already succeeded” He said
“Twice DPO has asked me to leave out of Dutsi even though there was no provision in any law which restrict my movement as a Nigeria.” He however, quoted an instance where governor Masari went to Edo state to witness the election of the state even though he isn’t an indigene from Edo state. “So APC is free to something that PDP cannot do similar in my own state?’’ He ask
“Just be it government have succeeded in chasing me out of Dutsi in my own state using any powerful way they have.”
When asked what he feels about the instance, he responded “I am just scared and I am afraid of 2019. In a situation whereby a government doesn’t care about the sweat and blood of a common man. Suddenly the same government in just in 2 years in power started snatching boxes, humiliating and hacking down people in other to win election. I am scared, I am scared honestly. In the remaining two years no one knows what will happen.”
“I am very glad, the PDP that was said is dead now the PDP is alive”. However according to him, APC has to snatch boxes and employ every power they have to win this election. He said PDP offers nothing to masses but was able to secure votes from the constituents.
